Integrate Unity and OpenViBE: Controlling an Avatar with Brain Waves

Thursday, 29 de April de 2021
Unity is a Game Engine that allows the creation of 2D, 3D games, applications in virtual and augmented reality. It is used in the games and animation studios. It is a tool that allows integration with iOS devices, Android and the Web platform.

OpenVibe is a software that allows recording and analyzing neurophysiological data, such as EEG and EMG. It is a simple platform with an easy-to-understand layout. Through OpenVibe it is possible to carry out a series of neurophysiological studies enabling visual feedback in real time of 2D and 3D graphics of cortical activity.

Thus, to integrate the two software, scripts must be used that can allow the real-time communication of the neurophysiological inputs with the virtual elements, allowing their interaction and movement using only EEG and EMG data.

This application can be used in neurorehabilitation processes of patients with motor deficits, such as: spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, parkinson's, stroke, cerebral palsy. In addition to applications in the health field, BCI-based EEG for controlling virtual avatars can be used for entertainment in the area of games.
